Description and Provenance Pierce, C. F. History and Camp Life of Company C, Fifty-First Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia 1862-1863. Worcester: C. Hamilton, 1886. First edition. Company C spent much of the Civil War near New Bern, NC. What makes this history particularly interesting is many extracts from letters and diaries written by the "army boys", from their own viewpoint, as events unfolded (rather than recollections). The book discusses endless marching, debilitating fatigue, unexpected optimism, and the tedium of camp life interspersed with fierce fighting. It tells of whiskey rations and cold fingers, scavenging for wood and help from local negroes, making coffee in the middle of the night and Rebel prisoners, and "the solemnity of a battle". Includes company history, roster, military records and copies of orders and reports. Brown cloth, 131p. Inscribed by the author. External wear, good hinges, clean pages with occasional finger soil, one internal closed tear. Clean and sound copy. |
